Meghan says she doesn't want 'people to love her' after revealing struggles in the spotlight

News comes as duchess officially opens a new bakery

The Duchess of Sussex has opened up about her relationship with the public, insisting that she doesn't want "people to love her".

Speaking to The Telegraph's Bryony Gordon – just weeks before her ITV documentary, Harry & Meghan: An African Adventure, aired – the journalist said she too asked Meghan how she was.

Revealing that her eyes "glistened" at the question, Bryony said: "She told me that she didn’t want people to love her – she just wanted them to be able to hear her."

The news comes as Meghan opened a new branch of London's Luminary Bakery, which "opens its arms to women from vulnerable circumstances and equips them with the job skills and confidence to succeed".

Wearing jeans and a navy and white striped shirt, the royal donned an apron and helped decorate a cake, before cutting a slice and posing for pictures.

You’re a wounded creature that needs to be healed, and that takes time.

Arriving at the bakery, Meghan told the women: "One of the things I have realised since being here [in the UK] is that people have an expectation when I’m coming somewhere."

She added: "So I’m like, let’s just be really relaxed, keep everyone nice and chilled, because at the end of the day we’re all just women. We all have a story to tell, and I feel honoured that I am getting to hear yours."

Earlier this week The Duchess of Sussex visited the women of @LuminaryBakery as they celebrated the opening of their new location. It was a special moment to acknowledge the spirit of Luminary and their remarkable business model that opens its arms to women from vulnerable circumstances (be it abuse, poverty, trafficking, marginalisation) and equips them with the job skills and confidence to succeed. Having sat down with @luminarybakery at their flagship location earlier this year and from that inspiring visit choosing to feature them as #ForcesForChange in the September issue of @britishvogue, Her Royal Highness was proud to be invited to attend the launch of their second bakery. This addition will enable the organisation to provide services, support and mentoring for four times the number of women. Luminary Bakery - a sustainable grassroots organisation in the heart of London - is a beautiful example of community and uplifting those during hardship for the greater good. While at the bakery, Meghan heard from some of the women the bakery has helped, with one welling up while telling her story.

Kind-hearted Meghan immediately passed the woman some tissues.

"I was talking about this with someone the other day. We aren’t mechanical objects that need to be fixed. You’re a wounded creature that needs to be healed, and that takes time. And that’s what I love about this place. It gives you the support to heal," the duchess said.

While at the bakery Meghan also gave an insight into life with baby Archie, who was born in May.

She revealed that, while Prince Harry has headed off to Japan to watch England play in this weekend's Rugby World Cup final, she will be watching at home with Archie, who'll be proudly wearing an England babygro.
