Madeleine McCann cops ‘close in on new prime suspect’

They are reportedly looking for a foreign man

| Updated:

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are closing in on a new prime suspect, it’s been claimed.

Cops are looking at a ‘new clue and suspect’, according to a local media report.

Officers have narrowed in on a ‘foreign man’ who was in the Algarve when Madeleine went missing aged three in 2007 from her holiday apartment in Praia da Luz.

The Correio de Manha newspaper said detectives are now ‘nearer to knowing what happened to Madeleine’.

Detectives from Scotland Yard recently met Policia Judiciaria (PJ) officers in Porto to share information on the investigation.

A source in Portugal told The Mirror: “The British were here recently, there were talks at the PJ office in the city.

“It’s all very secret but then it always is with the Madeleine case.

“Only the police know who the suspect is.”

Madeleine vanished 12 years ago on on May 3, while her parents dined at a tapas restaurant close to the apartment where she was sleeping with their twin baby siblings.

Last month, Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry placed presents in her bedroom to mark her 16th birthday.

Earlier this month, the Home Office promised £300,000 additional funding for the Met Police investigation.

The McCann family’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell said at the time: “Kate and Gerry have expressed their gratitude to the police for all the work they have done and continue to do in the search for their daughter.

“They are greatly encouraged that the Metropolitan Police still believe there is active work left to be done and they remain incredibly grateful to the Home Office for providing an extra budget for the investigation.”
