During a segment on her new body confidence series, Lorraine visited one of her favourite fitness classes.

She told viewers: “Like so many people, I found excuses not to commit to a regular exercise routine.

“But after finding exercise I really enjoy, and going to [fitness instructor] Maxine’s classes regularly, I feel better not only physically but mentally too.”

Back in the studio, Lorraine told Dr Hilary: “We were talking last year about the menopause and how difficult that can be for everybody, I did get quite anxious.

“[Exercise] really helps with that. It’s like I’ve had a spring clean in my head. It’s like being re-set, it really is.”

Lorraine said she wants other people dealing with the same struggles to not feel “ashamed in any way.”

The star continued: “Sometimes I feel completely overwhelmed. I’m better now, I have got HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and I swear by it, I know it’s not for everybody.”

As well as exercise, Lorraine said walks with her dog Angus can be “good for the soul.”

“I walk miles with Angus and that’s good for the soul, it really is. I don’t know what it is about having a small dog,” she added. “They instantly lift your spirits and make you feel better.”

Speaking about Maxine’s fitness classes, Lorraine continued: “The class is amazing. There’s a real ‘we’re all in this together’. Maxine is like an agony aunt at the end.”

She then urged viewers: “You can make that time. Just take that step. Just find something you love.

“Working out has helped me drop three dress sizes and changed my life in an important way.”

Last year, Lorraine opened up about her struggle with the menopause, saying it made her lose her ‘mojo’.

The star revealed that with the help of hormone replacement therapy patches, she started to feel great again.

“I lost my mojo,” she told Closer magazine at the time. “I didn’t feel like me. I wouldn’t say I was depressed at all but I wasn’t seeing much joy in things.”

Lorraine said she asked Dr Hilary for advice and began taking HRT to re-balance her life.

She added: “They’re fantastic and re-balanced me. Now I understand why I wasn’t feeling great myself. It was just a blip.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 8.30am on ITV.
