Long Lost Family viewers in tears as woman desperately searching for her mum discovers she has died

There was a happy ending though

Long Lost Family viewers were left sobbing last night after a woman, Cathy, discovered that her mother, Adrienne, had passed away before having the chance to be reunited with her.

Hosts Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell returned for a brand new series last night.

Cathy was on the show to meet her biological family after her mother gave her up for adoption when she was just 10-weeks-old.

Cathy, from Wirral, was told at an early age from her adoptive parents that she was adopted.

Long Lost Family had managed to locate Adrienne but found out that she had tragically passed away.

Her birth mother had left her a small box containing a heartbreaking letter from Adrienne to her adoptive parents expressing how much she loved her daughter.

A teary-eyed Cathy read the letter on camera last night.

It said: “To Catherine’s mummy and daddy, please don’t ever stop loving Catherine even when she’s naughty.

“If she ever asks why I gave her away please try and help her understand it was because I loved her so much.

“Thank you once again and may you always be a happy family.”

Speaking about reading the letter for the first time Cathy admitted: “When I first read it I couldn’t comprehend that it came from my birth mother.

“She obviously really really loved me. It was life-changing.”

Later on in the show Cathy was however given some happy news.

She was told that she had a half-sister, Ann, who was longing to meet Cathy.

Nicky managed to track Ann down and revealed she was “devastated” that she has never met her sister.

Speaking about how her mother Adrienne felt about the adoption Ann told Nicky: “It just devastated her and I don’t think she ever really got over it.

“For me it’s been a life long dream to meet [Cathy], my heart just breaks though because it’s all mum ever wanted and it’s just that little bit too late.”

Near the end of the show the two were finally reunited and viewers were overcome with emotion.

Cathy and Ann burst into tears as they hugged each other tight.

Ann told Cathy: “[Adrienne] wanted this so much. She just never ever stopped thinking about you.

“She wanted nothing more than to meet you.”

The pair then caught up on all the years they had missed.

Viewers were in tears and shared their thoughts on Twitter.

One said: “#longlostfamily crying  again!!!!! Oh cathy. Feel so sorry for her.”

“Cathy and her sister Anne are gorgeous women. How sad that Cathy will never meet her mum. #heartbreaking #longlostfamily,” another added.

A third tweeted: “Crying so heartbreaking but lovely at the same time #longlostfamily.”
