Kym Marsh reveals “scary” illness that led to brain scan – and no diagnosis

She said it's a "horrible" condition

Kym Marsh has yet to be given a diagnosis after undergoing a brain scan following a series of dizzy spells.

The Coronation Street actress, 41, told OK! magazine doctors initially thought it could be benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, stemming from an inner ear issue.

But she felt that wasn’t right, as her problems seem to be connected to eye movement.

Kym, who first experienced the symptoms in January, explained: “It’s a horrible feeling of dizzyness and being off balance, and like the floor’s uneven. The feeling of not being in complete control of my balance is scary.

“It’s worse when I’m in busy places like shopping centres. It hasn’t been so bad that I’ve fallen over – that’s a sensation I get – but it’s still scary.”

Kym was told to undergo a brain scan, which ruled out a tumour or signs of multiple sclerosis, but she still hasn’t been given a firm diagnosis.

“I was anxious when I was told I had to have a brain scan; I did worry that it might be something more sinister,” she said.

She’s currently on an anti-vertigo medication to improve blood flow to the brain, and is learning to manage her symptoms.

The star said she’s been told the symptoms “will just go when it’s ready”.

Kym, who plays Michelle Connor in Corrie, first spoke about the condition in her OK! column earlier this year, saying it had left her unable to drive and restricted in what she could do at work.

The star had some happier things to celebrate last week, however, as her little girl Polly turned seven.

Kym marked the big occasion with a collage of photos on Twitter, telling fans: “7 years ago today this little lady came into our lives and lit up our world. Polly we love you more than any words can ever express. Happy happy birthday our little miracle.”

The star is also mum to son David, 22, and daughter Emilie, 20, from a previous relationship.

In an interview with ITV’s Lorraine in January, Kym revealed she’s made the decision to not have any more children, after a difficult pregnancy with Polly and tragically losing son Archie just moments after his birth in 2009.

Kym said: “To be honest, I took the decision to not have any more children. I can’t have any more children now.

“I made that decision after I had Polly. I don’t know if anybody knows. I almost lost Polly as well several times throughout the pregnancy and it was very traumatic.

“I was on bed rest for months and she was born very early. She was born seven weeks premature. Thankfully she’s okay and really healthy, but it was traumatic.

“I took the decision I wasn’t going to [have more children] as I’m lucky enough to have the three children I’ve got, and I didn’t want to run that risk because it’s too painful.”
