Jason Manford helps raise thousands for boy with Down’s Syndrome

Comedian with a big heart

Jason Manford has, over the last few years, gained almost as big a reputation for doing good as he has for doing comedy.

The 36-year-old comic regularly uses his social media profiles to highlight good causes, and attempts to raise money for worthy recipients.

But he went above and beyond over the course of this weekend.

The funnyman read the devastating story of Alex Jones, a 12-year-old with Down’s Syndrome, who was left at a bus depot when a driver didn’t drop him home after school.

Naturally, his mum Victoria was frantic when Alex didn’t return home, and it wasn’t until bus depot was being locked up for the night that he was found.

Jason then got involved when he learned Alex and his family had been trying to raise money to go on holiday to Walt Disney World in Florida with Cauldwell Children’s annual Destination Dreams.

But they’d only managed to raise £240 of the £12,000 needed.

On Friday, Jason wrote on Facebook: “Just had a really funny thought. Imagine if we got this kid’s charity appeal to £12k overnight and then I just deleted the posts about it.

“That family would wake up tomorrow morning having gone from £240 to £12k with not a clue how! We could be charity ninjas!”

Overnight, the account flew up to more than £17,000 more than enough to send Alex on the trip.

And as promised, Jason deleted the posts shortly afterwards, writing: “Nothing to see here folks. #Crackedit #CharityNinjas #ThankYou”.

Unsurprisingly, Alex’s mum was blown away by the generosity.

She said to Wales Online: “I can’t believe it. I checked the donation page and I am just gobsmacked at how he’s got so many people to do it.

“I’m going to private message him to say thank you and to say we’re very grateful. I’m shocked.

“All I can say is thank you. We’re all going to have a fantastic time now.”
