David Beckham has found himself in a media storm after a string of nasty emails of his have been leaked, wrecking his carefully-managed image.
Among other embarrassing revelations, the messages seem to suggest that ‘Golden Balls’ tried to leverage his charity work to secure a knighthood.
In one message, the 41-year-old branded the Honours Committee “unappreciative c***s” after missing out on one in 2013 and dismissed lesser awards, ranting: “Unless it’s a knighthood f*** off”.
Hard to believe, right?
The story broke when team Beckham refused to cave in to a £1m blackmail demand from hackers who had lifted the emails from Becks’ PR firm.
His comments about Katherine Jenkins seem particularly ungentlemanly.
In the (no longer) private emails, he seethed: “Katherine Jenkins OBE for what? Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops plus taking coke. F****** joke.”
The opera singer’s representative has since responded stating: “‘Beckham says, ‘Katherine Jenkins OBE for what? Singing at the rugby and going to see the troops plus taking coke. F***ing joke’.
“I say Katherine was awarded an OBE for her services to music and charity.
“With regards to the taking of coke which Katherine has courageously publicly admitted with great honesty — this was when she was in her early 20s still studying, over a decade before she was awarded her OBE and started her recording career.”
Why is Beckham so scathing? Some have pointed to the weird event back in 2012 when Katherine took to Twitter to tell everybody that she had NOT been having an affair with the former England captain.
She wrote: “Dear Twitter friends, I’ve read some horrible rumours on here & want u 2 know I absolutely deny I’ve had an affair with David Beckham.
“The rumours are very hurtful, untrue & my lawyers tell me actionable.
She added: “I’ve only met David twice: once at the Military Awards in 2010 & on a night out in the West End in Feb 2012.
“We were out in a group of friends & it was just a normal fun evening out. Just so we are clear I have never been on my own with him and never arranged to meet up.”
What really confused people at the time was that nobody seemed to have heard of the rumours, prompting them to wonder why she even raised the issue.
Becks’ wife Victoria was also said to be pretty angry with Katherine bringing MORE rumours about David to the tabloids’ attention.
Apparently, Jenkins felt like she had no choice but to set the record straight, saying “It went from being now and again to constant abuse.
“I was getting death threats before I spoke about it. You wouldn’t believe how crazy and out of control it was getting,” she told the Western Mail.
So maybe Becks just doesn’t rate her singing, or maybe he’s still smarting from the fuss caused by Katherine’s very public denials, almost six years later.
