Versailles season 2 escalates with naked blood ritual on BBC2

Brace yourself for the latest X-rated episode of Versailles

| Updated:

We’re no prudes here at ED!, but even we had to do a double take when we heard what’s in store in the latest episode of BBC2 show Versailles.

The French-Canadian period drama, which returned for a second season last week, follows the early reign of the French ‘Sun King’ Louis XIV as he commissions the building of his famous palace.

But while the premise sounds fairly tame, so far the content has been anything but. We’ve had everything from group sex to dwarves, and a fair smattering of full-frontal nudity in between!

Still, that’s nothing compared to what’s coming up in tonight’s instalment: a full-on naked blood ritual!

Yes, you read that right. In the episode, the King’s pregnant mistress, Madame de Montespan, is seen sprawled out on a stone slab as priests perform magic over her.

The raunchy dame, played by Anna Brewster, had hinted in the previous episode that she liked to dabble in the dark arts. Little did we know that we’d witness such depravity first hand the following week!

We should’ve known better. After all, Versailles has courted controversy ever since it first aired on BBC2 last May.

And the show’s producers heralded the second series by announcing that there would be 30 sex scenes in just ten episodes.

However, the Beeb was quick to point out that the X-rated scenes are all above board.

“Versailles is an established series shown after 9pm on BBC2,” said one insider. “Its content is nothing beyond the expectations of a post-watershed UK television audience.”

So what else can we expect from the second season?

We won’t give away all the juicy details, but in a short teaser for the series, King Louis – played by George Blagden – is heard telling his aristocratic friends: “When I look at you, I see corruption, darkness, temptation, greed, murder…”

You have been warned.
