Former Doctor Who joins Holby City

He'll play a real doctor this time!

Paul McGann is joining Holby City as surgeon Professor John Gaskell.

The actor, who played the eighth incarnation of the Doctor in 1996, is set to shake things up in his new role.

John will arrive as Holby faces a major crisis. He’s there to take charge with a series of surgical innovations and hopefully save the day.

It won’t all be plain sailing for the “surgical star with irrepressible charm” as he’s going to clash with other big personalities on the wards including Jac, Ric, and Hanssen.

Speaking of the new role, Paul said:

“I’m really excited to be joining Holby.

“Professor John Gaskell is certainly going to be an interesting character, and I can’t wait to get started on the wards.”

Oliver Kent, who is Head of Continuing Drama for BBC Scripted Studios revealed he’s “thrilled” to have Paul on board.

“I’m utterly thrilled that the brilliant Paul McGann has agreed to join the cast of Holby City as Professor John Gaskell.

“I’ve admired Paul’s work for many years on stage, screen and radio and it’s a dream come true that he is joining our company.

“In his hands, John Gaskell will be a mercurial force to be reckoned with and I can’t wait to see him locking horns with Jac, Hanssen, Griffin and the other Holby titans.”

Unfortunately, we’ve got quite a while to wait before we see Gaskell on our screens. Paul begins filming in August, but apparently won’t appear on the show until December.

As well as playing the Time Lord, Paul is best known for his roles in Withnail and I, Luther, and Jonathan Creek.

We can’t wait to see what he brings to Holby.
