Fans furious as soaps are cancelled for football again

Corrie and Emmerdale aren't on tonight because of England game

Soap fans were up in arms after discovering tonight’s episodes of Emmerdale and Coronation Street have been cancelled in favour of the football.

ITV are showing England’s 2020 Euro qualifier against Montenegro, meaning the soaps have been ditched – much to the disgust of the shows’ fans.

Those switching over for Emmerdale will be met by the likes of Harry Kane heading out onto the pitch.

While those wanting to know if Carla will be held responsible for the factory roof collapse in Corrie will instead be greeted by the beautiful game.

Let’s just hope England bring home a win, as soap fans really aren’t happy. Twitter erupted once the schedules were released, with some wondering when ITV would get a dedicated sports channel to show the matches, instead of interrupting their viewing.

“Why can’t football go on ITV2?!!” one rather irate user asked, adding: “Anyone who wants to watch it can find it easily enough. I hate how Corrie gets shunted around for sport.”

Another posted: “Incredibly disappointed that Emmerdale and Corrie have been cancelled for the football. We give you our loyalty every night and you cancel for something as ridiculous as football.”

They added: “It’s bad enough we have to give it up for weeks on end for the World Cup #leaveitalone.”

Some even threatened to complain to regulator Ofcom, tweeting: “Not all of us like football @ITV. Don’t care about your advertisers. The MAJORITY of us want 2 watch the soaps. Maybe if we complain 2 Ofcom you might listen [sic]?”

Fans also posted memes complaining about ITV’s decision, with one asking: “What you playing at ITV?”

“Can you stop showing the football and spoiling my soap night,” another pleaded.

Normal service is due to resume for Emmerdale on Tuesday, with fans being treated to an hour-long episode. Corrie fans will have to wait till Wednesday for their two-episode fix, though.
