Ex-NASCAR driver Robby Gordon’s father strangled wife, shot himself, say police

Legendary racing family in mourning over tragic loss

Former NASCAR driver Robby Gordon’s dad and his wife have been found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police say legendary off-road racer Robert ‘Baja Bob’ Gordon, 68, strangled wife, 57-year-old Sharon Gordon, then fatally shot himself.

No further details on the motive or circumstances were released.

Outside the home on Thursday, the LA Times reported Robby Gordon fought back tears as he spoke about his loss.

He said: “I’m so sad, and I can’t believe it.

“I grew up on this property my whole life. I learned everything about motorsports out of this little tiny barn over here.”

He went on: “The truth will come out, what went down there.”

It was at around 5pm on Wednesday police say they found the bodies inside their luxury home in Orange, 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles.

The racer told reporters he and his three sisters, one of which gave birth to Robert’s grandson on Wednesday, were devastated.

“It’s going to be tough on all of us,” he told reporters.

Orange Police Lt. Fred Lopez said family members asked a neighbor to check on the couple on Wednesday because they couldn’t reach them.

The neighbor entered the home and discovered the bodies.

A weapon was found in the home, but it is unclear whether it was used in their deaths.

Lopez said of the couple’s family: “They are distraught and are asking me not to make statements.”

Property records show Robby Gordon, 47, has owned his father’s home since 1989.

Sharon is the step-mother to Robby and his two sisters, Beccy Gordon Hunter-Reay and Robyn Gordon.

The Gordon family is known for racing, as Huntley Gordon, Robert’s father and Robby’s great-grandfather, raced Indy cars in the early 1900s.

Robby Gordon, who won fame racing in the IndyCar Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, now participates in off-road vehicle competitions, such as the Baja 500 and the Dakar Rally.

Known as “Baba Bob” Gordon, his father competed in off-road racing.

His sister, Beccy Gordon Hunter-Reay, is also an off-road racer.

She was also a swimsuit model for brands like Roxy, Quiksilver and became the youngest member on the U.S. women’s national softball team, inducting the sport into the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Tragically according to her husband’s social media accounts, she gave birth to a boy on Wednesday.

Her husband, Ryan Hunter-Reay, is a professional race car driver and won the Indianapolis 500  in 2014.

The NASCAR community sent their condolences to the Gordon family.

NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt said he was praying for Robby and Beccy Gordon.
