Everything we know about series two of ITV’s Liar – including start date

The psychological thriller starring Joanne Froggatt is returning this year...

British psychological thriller Liar was the water cooler TV series of 2017, which followed schoolteacher Laura Nielson after she accused renowned surgeon Andrew Earlham of rape and fought to bring him to justice…

The dramatic climax left millions of viewers on the edge of their sofas – and the good news is that the second series, which is just around the corner, promises to do the same.

Here is everything you need to know about the return of the series…

How did the last series end?

After vowing to bring Andrew Earlham to justice, Laura discovered the evidence she needed to prove Andrew’s guilt – video footage of him raping 17 different women.

However, when police arrived to arrest him, he had disappeared without a trace.

Missing for weeks and presumed to be on the run, fans were given one final, shocking, surprise in the series finale – Andrew’s lifeless body was seen half-submerged in the muddy marshes, his throat apparently slit above a bloodied shirt.

But who killed him? And, dare we say it, is he really dead?

Who will star in the second series?

Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd are reprising their roles as Laura and Andrew, with Ioan appearing in flashback sequences chronicling the events leading up to his character’s death.

What will series two focus on?

The new episodes will reveal who killed Andrew, and unravel some of the unanswered questions in the first series. For example, what happened to Andrew’s orphaned son Luke?

Prime suspects in Andrew’s murder include Laura, who certainly had motive. Or could Andrew’s son Luke have realised his mum’s suicide was due to Andrew’s relentless emotional abuse?

DI Harmon’s wife Jennifer also had good reason to want Andrew dead, and the skills to do the deed. Laura’s ex Tom Bailey and her new man Ian are also plausible suspects too, as is Laura’s sister Katy.

When is series two on TV?

Liar will return to ITV for a second series in 2019. ED! will update you as soon as the date is confirmed.

The show’s writers, brothers Jack and Harry Williams, have revealed that it is likely to be on around September time.

Jack told TV Times: “It should be out in the autumn. Joanne Froggatt and Ioan Gruffudd are back. We’re delighted that anyone frustrated by the cliffhanger will be rewarded for their patience. Questions are answered and the title is central.”

Harry added: “It’s a different lie. Who’s lying about what? The audience will be figuring that out…”
