Eamonn Holmes gets no sympathy from Ruth Langsford as he reveals early death fears

This Morning segment prompted the conversation

Eamonn Holmes revealed he worries he could die if he’s not “breathing enough” during a segment about the correct way to breathe on This Morning.

The presenter, 59, and his wife Ruth Langsford met breathing coach Rebecca Dennis, who revealed how breathing more effectively can change all aspects of your life.

Rebecca said teenagers and adults only use a third of their respiratory system, so they should learn how to breathe like babies do.

Revealing his concerns about his own breathing, Eamonn said: “I worry maybe I’m not breathing enough and could pass away through not doing it right.”

Ruth said: “That’s a bit dramatic.”

Eamonn replied: “It’s true darling. It’s very important. The older you get the less you breathe until you die.”

Rebecca then revealed new techniques the duo could try out in the studio.

She said: “There’s many different breathing techniques. In a nutshell breath work helps people to understand how they think and feel by changing rhythms of their breathing and be more conscious about how they’re breathing.”

Rebecca revealed humans usually breathe around 20,000 times a day.

As Eamonn and Ruth demonstrated their breathing by taking a deep breath in, Rebecca said they were using their shoulders rather than their diaphragm.

Eamonn quipped: “My trouble is every time I look at my wife I lose my breath.”

Rebecca then asked Eamonn and Ruth to place one hand on their chest and the other hand on their stomach.

She told them to breathe in and push their stomach out.

Eamonn said: “My instinct is to suck my belly in. It’s difficult,” as he struggled to master the technique.

Rebecca then explained the “box breath” technique, which is where you inhale for four counts, hold for four counts, exhale for four counts, hold for four counts and repeat.

The technique is used in the SAS for highly stressful situations to focus and tune in with each other.

Rebecca also revealed the “breath of fire” technique in which someone breathes in and pulls their stomach in before exhaling for short quick breaths in rounds of 30 continuous breaths whilst still keeping the belly pulled in.

Learning how to breathe is apparently the latest celebrity trend and is reportedly practiced by Hollywood stars Oprah Winfrey and Gwyneth Paltrow.
