Debbie McGee clarifies comments about new love after Paul Daniels’ death

Magician Paul passed away in March 2016

Debbie McGee has clarified remarks about dating again following the death of husband Paul Daniels.

The Strictly Come Dancing star has claimed she was “misquoted” when it was reported she’s ready to find love again after Paul’s death from a brain tumour two years ago.

Debbie, 59, told OK! Online: “I’ve been quite misquoted this week as they said that I’m ready for love. What I said was that I hope I won’t be on my own for the rest of my life.

“And I’m just a person who lives each day as it comes and maybe along the line I might meet somebody but you know.

“But I’m not looking for it. I’m still recovering from grief.”

Debbie and Paul were married from 1988 until his death in 2016.

In an interview with ITV’s Lorraine earlier this month, Debbie said of finding love again: “Where a year ago I couldn’t even contemplate thinking about it, it’s not not in my head now.”

And she told Hello magazine recently: “I don’t want to be on my own for the rest of my life. I love male company, I’m full of energy and don’t want to be stuck at home alone.

“Although I have male friends that take me out for lunches and dinners, I wouldn’t describe them as dates.

“Nobody has actually asked me out yet, but when they do, I’ll go. That’s how I deal with life, by taking it as it comes.”

Debbie has praised Strictly and her pro partner Giovanni Pernice for helping get her sparkle back following her heartbreak over Paul’s death.

She said on Loose Women last year the programme had allowed people to get to know her better and see her as more than just Paul’s assistant.

“It was really nice for me to show everybody there is a bit more to me than that,” she said.

“When I married Paul I had a good career in the business and I’d seen a lot of showbiz marriages split up and go awry, I always put him first and have no regrets. I had over 30 amazing years with Paul and I thought if I pushed my career we wouldn’t see each other.”

“He would have absolutely loved [watching me on Strictly],” she added.

“If I did well, he was always happy for me, so he would be looking down on me every week.”
