David Walliams branded “racist” for his Halloween costume

But some fans thought it was hilarious

Funnyman David Walliams is no stranger to a bit of fancy dress. He found mega-stardom on Little Britain, which saw him dress in all kinds of outrageous outfits.

But some fans believe he stepped over the line at a Halloween party last night, when he took on a costume that required him to change race.

David stepped out dressed as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, and has split his fanbase, with many describing his actions as racist and others simply seeing it as a bit of fun.

David was an attendee of Jonathan Ross’s annual Halloween bash, where he mingled with friends and other A-listers.

He posted snaps with Michael McIntyre (to whom he also bore a striking resemblance) and fellow comic John Bishop.

But some of his social media followers on Instagram and Twitter were disappointed with the outfit, lashing out in the comments.

One said: “Not gonna lie, I’ve got a bit of a problem with yellow face for Halloween. Would you black up as well in the spirit of ‘Oh it’s just a bit of fun for Halloween?'”

One commented: “You are going to receive a lot of flack for this,” while a third said: “Only David Walliams could get away with this.”

“How long is David Walliams going to be openly racist for and keep a career?” asked another.

However, thousands of fans commented saying how hilarious they thought the costume was, with one writing: “You are absolutely mental but that’s why we love you.”

Another said: “Wish people could get a sense of humour instead of getting offended all the time.”

David himself hasn’t responded to the comments as yet, but on a night where Alan Carr dressed as a zombie Gemma Collins and Nicole Scherzinger turned up as Cleopatra, David was probably on the low end of the weirdness scale.

One thing’s for sure, David still knows how to scare up a good bit of controversy when he feels like it – wonder what he’ll dress as next year!
