Earlier in the week, headlines shouted about David Beckham describing his marriage as “hard”.
But now the former footballer’s full interview has aired, where he talks in more detail about his relationship with Victoria Beckham and family life.
Speaking in an exclusive chat with Lisa Wilkinson on Australian TV show The Sunday Project, the 43-year-old star said: “Marriage is always about hard work. Your children, they want your time and they deserve your time.
“We are hard working and we feel that is the right way to bring up our children, to prove and to show to them that actually you have to work really hard to be successful. We’ve been married for a really long time now.”
He went on: “To be married the amount of time we have, it’s always hard work – everybody knows that. But you make it work. You make difficult situations – travelling away, being away from each other – you make it work.”
David also praised his fashion designer wife of nearly 20 years, saying: “The amount she’s achieved in such a short space of time… four beautiful, young children and we have a beautiful dog. But obviously in her business world – to be on the cover of Vogue! – it’s a huge thing.”
He also added that he’s not bothered by people misinterpreting his words, saying he’s “grown to ignore” any negative stories about his family and knows he’s surrounded by good people.
The former England captain added that his only concern is: “The thing we have to do is protect our children and we’re very proud of the family.”

David is dad to Brooklyn 18, Romeo 16, Cruz, 13, and seven-year-old Harper, with Victoria.
David is in Australia to support Prince Harry’s Invictus Games and was pictured arriving in Sydney alongside wife Victoria.
His chat with The Sunday Project was his only TV interview Down Under, and host Lisa took to Instagram this week to praise the star for being so candid in their chat.
She told fans: “David Beckham rarely gives sit-down interviews, but last week, ahead of his arrival in Australia for the #InvictusGames, I sat down with David in London for his only Aussie TV interview. Charming? You bet. And completely candid about so many areas of his life I thought might be off limits…”
David was announced as an ambassador for Prince Harry’s Invictus Games in August.
In a post to Instagram, he wrote: “I’ve been lucky enough to meet and work with many serving, veteran and wounded British armed forces personnel over the years and I’ve been humbled by the courage, resilience and spirit shown by each and every one of them.
“So, I’m incredibly proud to announce I will be an Ambassador for this year’s Invictus Games in Sydney. The entire Invictus Games team, led by the Duke of Sussex, has achieved remarkable things in such a short space of time, using sport as a powerful force to rehabilitate and unite and I can’t wait to be part of the energy and the excellence of the Games this year.”
