Crimestalker presenter and former police officer John Stalker dies aged 79

He featured in the TV show Crimestalker after leaving the force

Former police officer John Stalker, known for his work on the Moors Murders and the Stalker inquiry, has passed away at the age of 79.

John was a Deputy Chief Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police and also starred in the TV show Crimestalker after leaving the force.

His eldest daughter Colette Carwright paid tribute to her dad in a statement, writing: “After marrying my dear mum Stella in 1961 he spent his life as a devoted police officer, proudly serving the people of Greater Manchester for over 30 years.

“He is fondly remembered by many as going above and beyond the call of duty and was committed to making a difference for those most in need.

“Respected by many of his colleagues, he had a varied career and held posts in the Serious Crime Squad and the Bomb Squad.”

She continued: “He is fondly remembered by many as going above and beyond the call of duty and was committed to making a difference for those most in need. As testament to this, he devoted his life to a career in CID where he worked for 16 years, rising to the rank of Detective Superintendent.

“Respected by many of his colleagues, he had a varied career and held posts in the Serious Crime Squad and the Bomb Squad. He also became the first head of the drugs squad.

“My dad will be sorely missed by all lives he has touched both professionally and personally. We will always be proud of him and everything he achieved.”

Tributes have began pouring in for John on Twitter.

ITV News presenter Mary Nightingale wrote: “Very sad to hear of the death of former Greater Manchester Dep Chief Constable John Stalker. We worked together on “Crime Stalker” for ITV Central in the mid ‘90s. Lovely kind man, full of fascinating chat and fun.”

Greater Manchester Police’s offical page said: “Following the sad news of the passing of former Deputy Chief Constable John Stalker today, the thoughts of GMP are with his family.”

When he was an officer, John headed the Stalker Inquiry that investigated the shooting of suspected members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1982.

At age 38, he became the youngest Detective Chief Superintendent in Britain.
