Couple with 53-year age gap defend their relationship after meeting at her son’s funeral

He's 21 and she's 74

A couple with a 53-year age gap, who met at her son’s funeral, have spoken about what makes their love survive.

In videos shared to their YouTube channel Almeda Errell, 74, and her husband Gary Harwick, 21, said they wanted to address some of the stereotypes surrounding age gap couples and some of the negative things people have said about them.

Almeda and Gary, from Tennessee, first met when she was 71 and he was 17 at her son’s funeral in 2016, and they got married after just three weeks of dating.

Widower Almeda hadn’t been expecting to find love, but she told The Mirror she “knew straight away he was the one.”

Three years later the pair are going strong and have started their own YouTube Channel to document their relationship.

In a vlog posted on January 5, they discuss the stereotypes surrounding their relationship and attempt to “debunk” the myths.

They said the biggest problem they come up against is people accusing one of them of being a gold digger.

“That’s a big laugh,” says Almeda. “We don’t have any money, neither one of us!”

“It really makes me mad to an extent that people want to judge in that way because they forget that there are people out there that genuinely love each other and are truly in love like me and my wife,” added Gary.

Almeda also goes on to say their “sex life is great”, which Gary confirms and insists has nothing to do with age.

They also insisted they were compatible, both loving the same things such as music and the outdoors, and that once again it has nothing to do with age.

“Since day one we connected so well,” reveals Gary.

Almeda also posted her own video entitled “Girls Talk”, where she offers advice on relationships.

“In our relationship, we do little things each day to help each other out,” she says. “Whether it be he cooks super or mop for me or something, just little things like that to show your gratitude. We always thank each other for anything that we do.”

She says she shows her husband she loves him every day and compliments him.

She also opened up about her first marriage, which lasted for 43 years.

“I was married for 43 years, there wasn’t a lot of romance there. We had our children and we just spent our life around them.

“There wasn’t a lot of kissy huggy stuff going on.”

But she revealed her current relationship sees them go out all the time, compliment each other and kiss each other, describing Gary as her “perfect one, [her] soulmate”.
