Coronation Street star pays tribute to fallen British soldier

TV star is an ambassador for Armed Forces' charities

Coronation Street star Antony Cotton has paid tribute to the soldier who was killed in the line of duty in Syria.

The actor is an ambassador for Armed Forces charities Help For Heroes and SSAFA, formerly known as the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

After the sad news of SAS hero Sgt Matt Tonroe’s death was announced, Antony paid his respects on social media.

Using the image of the fallen serviceman, Antony posted on Twitter saying:  “Gutted for Sgt Matt Tonroe. Rest easy, Soldier.”

Sgt Tonroe, from Manchester, was killed by a road side bomb whilst he was part of a US-led coalition in the war torn country.

He is the first casualty to be lost from the British Armed Forces.

Antony was the first ever celebrity ambassador of SSAFA.

He has spent much of his time supporting the cause, which is very close to his heart with close friends in the Armed Forces.

When his appointment was announced, the former Dancing On Ice star said: “I’ve seen first-hand the vital work that SSAFA does and I am truly honoured to be the charity’s first ambassador.”

“Some of my closest friends are serving in the Armed Forces and I am passionate about supporting our Service men and women, veterans and their families.”

He has also helped to raise money for Help For Heroes, which supports those with injuries and illnesses attributable to their service in the British Armed Forces.

He even climbed Ben Nevis last year to raise funds for the cause.

Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Sgt Tonroe.
