Britain ‘hotter than Hawaii today’ as heatwave scorches the country

The UK could be in line for a record-breaking day as the mercury is set to nudge 35C.

The Met Office says that today’s weather could be ‘hotter than the Caribbean and Hawaii’ today.

The June record of 36.5C – recorded in 1957 – is under threat, with speculation suggesting that it could be the hottest June day in the UK for 178 years.

The Met Office also issued a high UV warning level, saying in a tweet: “Hot and strong sunshine for many areas today, make sure you have the hat and sun cream on.”

It went onto say in today’s forecast: “Hot and sunny across central, eastern and southeast England with some very high temperatures.”

Revellers attending this year’s Glastonbury festival have been urged to seek shade, drink plenty of water and apply sunscreen.

Although temperatures could smash June records today, there is the threat of thunderstorms later in some parts of the country.

The Met Office added: “Somewhat cloudier and cooler across the far west and northwest of the UK. A risk of a few thunderstorms across eastern Scotland and northeast England later.”

The forecast continued: “Any thunderstorms will clear northeastern areas.

“Most places will be dry overnight, though some showers possible across the northwest.

“The southeast of England staying warm and humid, but fresher elsewhere.”

Yesterday (Thursday 28 June), police warned those looking to cool off about the dangers of swimming in open water.

A 12-year-old girl tragically drowned in a river in Bury and two men died after being pulled from the sea off a beach in Torquay on Thursday.
