His dad went into shock and had to be restrained

An eight-year-old has choked to death in front of his family during a Spanish fiesta in the Canary Islands.

The boy was reportedly eating a hot dog at a funfair on Gran Canaria when he stopped breathing.

He and his family were near a beach bar in Telde, a town on the western side of the island, when the incident happened on Sunday (June 23).

According to the Mirror, he began to choke soon after he started eating and his family desperately tried to help him.

Two ambulances and police were called to the scene around midnight and spent an hour attempting to resuscitate the boy, but he was pronounced dead shortly after 1am.

According to reports, the child’s father went into shock when he was told his son had died and had to be restrained.

Both parents are believed to have been offered psychological help.

The island was celebrating Spain’s annual San Juan festivities, which mark midsummer and see bonfires lit to protect against ‘evil spirits’.

But the local council reportedly called the remaining celebrations off and cancelled a number of sporting and cultural events that were set to take place.

The authority is also understood to have declared two days of official mourning as a mark of respect for the boy and his family.

He continued: “We are dismayed and very affected.”
