A former BBC radio host is on life support following a horrific attack in Benidorm.

Jimmy Carol sustained a serious brain injury and fractured skull when he was punched to the floor following an altercation in a bar after England’s World Cup match against Columbia last week.

His son, James Everall, has shared a harrowing image on Facebook of his dad in hospital as the family now seek to raise money to bring his attacker to justice.

He wrote: “Last night (Tuesday 3rd July) my father Jimmy Carol a 63 year old grandfather, was attacked in a bar in Benidorm, Spain. He was hit so hard he hit the floor already unconscious and subsequently his head hit the floor causing a fractured skull and severe bleeding of the brain.

“He was unconscious until he could murmur some incomprehensible words at some point in the middle of early morning, at which point he was put into an induced coma for scans and immediate surgery to release the pressure and swelling on his brain.

“He has been transferred to Alicante Hospital for further CT scans and monitoring but remains in an induced coma.”

James and his brother Daniel have flown to be by their father’s bedside and have asked for people to pray for his recovery.

They are also appealing for any information to help find the man who dealt the “sucker punch” which floored Jimmy following an altercation with a group in a bar.

James has obtained CCTV footage which appears to show his father consoling a woman who was “being abused by male members of the group.”

“The female seems to know the group and this could have been a domestic issue that my Father got caught up in,” James writes.

“The person who assaulted my father is the person in the red shirt and shorts and this apparently happened as a ‘sucker punch’ as everything was calming down.

“From the CCTV you then see several members of the group leaving the premises. What you don’t see is the guy in the red shirt and another in a long white shirt run away in the opposite direction to the wider group. They jumped over the bar fence and apparently sprinted up the road.”

Local police are currently investigating. Meanwhile, Jimmy’s family have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to offer as a reward for information to catch his attacker.

Donations have started coming in and James has also received hundreds of messages of support on his Facebook posts.

Thanking everyone for their kind words, James said: “Please continue to pray for my Father. We really are in need of a miracle. Praying he responds soon and the CT scan is a positive response.

“Please also pray for the authorities that they would understand the gravity of this situation.  Please also pray for my brother and I who are obviously shaken and disturbed by all of this.

“Finally, please pray for the person who did this. Pray that they realise the gravity of their drunken actions and that they have the courage to turn themselves in.”
