Ant McPartlin admits he’s still haunted by drink-drive crash

The TV star said he's trying to be a "better man" following his arrest

Ant McPartlin has admitted he is still haunted by his drink-drive crash, which saw him fined a record £86,000 and banned for 20 months.

The award-winning Britain’s Got Talent host, 43, crashed his Mini into two cars in West London last year.

Police found he was twice over the legal limit at the time of the smash.

Recalling the crash, he told The Guardian Weekend magazine: “I’ve constantly relived the incident. I know how serious that could have been and I am doing things on a daily basis to be a better man.”

A young boy who was travelling in one of the car’s Ant hit feared for his life, screaming: “I’m dying mummy.”

Ant added to the publication: “I thank God every night that nobody was seriously hurt. I constantly think about it.”

In the same interview, Ant’s presenting sidekick Dec told of how upset he was when he found out about the drink-drive arrest.

Dec confessed he wanted to “punch” his long-time best friend and admitted they almost split for good.

Dec revealed he asked himself: “How could he do that? I wanted to punch him and hug him at the same time – and I didn’t know which one I wanted to do first.”

Dec said they even “considered splitting up”, adding: “We had a heart-to-heart. I said, ‘Look, forget everything – TV, the partnership – you’ve just got to go and get well.’ I think I said I’d give everything up if he could just be happy again.”

Ant, who is now dating former PA Anne-Marie Corbett after splitting from wife Lisa Armstrong last year, was handed a 20-month driving ban after his arrest, and took a year off work to attend rehab and work on his addictions.

Meanwhile, Ant and Dec fans will be able to get a deeper insight into the presenter’s roller coaster few years after it was announced a new documentary will look at his “trials and tribulations”.

Peter Andre admitted he’d worked on the show, telling new! magazine: “I filmed a segment for a new documentary about Ant and Dec.

“I can’t give too much away because I don’t know what will make the final cut, but it’s basically about the pressures of the industry and the trials and tribulations facing Ant following his drink driving arrest and rehab stint.”
