The YouGov poll shows that Pizza Express is still a hit with diners on the high street, with 53 per cent of those surveyed voting it their favourite dining brand.

At the top of the poll was bakery chain Greggs with 66 per cent, while pub chain JD Wetherspoon came in at number two with 59 per cent.

At three was global burger giant McDonald’s, while Pizza Express’s high street pizza rival, Pizza Hut, came in at four with 54 per cent.

The top coffee chain – Costa Coffee – made it in at number seven with 52 per cent.

Despite Pizza Express’ strong showing in the poll, it was revealed today (7.10.19) that the chain had reportedly hired advisors to guide it through debt talks with its creditors amid tough trading conditions for UK restaurant chains.

In its 2018 accounts, Pizza Express reported net debt of £1.1bn, with interest charges of £93.1m, resulting in a pre-tax loss of £55m.

The Pizza Express news comes after Jamie Oliver’s restaurant chain filed for insolvency in the spring.

While Prezzo – one of Pizza Express’ competitors – has closed 94 of its stores.

Greggs has enjoyed a good year, even though its vegan sausage roll caused controversy.

Piers Morgan voiced his fury at the creation of the vegan snack but he faced backlash.

When Greggs announced it would be selling the vegan-friendly snack the Good Morning Britain host slammed them on Twitter.

He wrote: “Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns.”

Greggs saw the funny side, though, replying with: “Oh hello Piers, we’ve been expecting you”.
