They seemed thrilled to be doing their food shop once again

After months in lockdown, Asda has welcomed a pair of 96-year-old twins back into store.

The sisters – from Tipton in the West Midlands – have been shielding at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

However, over the weekend, as a special treat for their birthday, their local branch of Asda was pleased to welcome them back.

Doris and Lil have shopped at the Great Bridge store for 20 years and an Asda rep said staff at the store had missed them.

What happened when the twins visited Asda?

Sharing four images of the twins shopping on Instagram, it appears the feeling was mutual.

Wearing cute matching twin sets, protective gloves and face masks, Doris and Lil looked thrilled to be back in store.

It was the first time Britain’s oldest identical twins have left their warden-assisted accommodation in six months.

They were pictured pushing their trollies around the store, with each one containing a basket with a birthday bow on the front.

Asda explained that the ladies visited the supermarket before it opened to the public. As a result, this made it even safer for the elderly twins to shop.

It was absolutely marvellous. The Queen couldn’t have had it any better than us.

Posting to Instagram, Asda said: “Yesterday, we welcomed back our customers of 20 years the @tiptontwins to our Great Bridge store.”

The post continued: “It’s their first visit since lockdown and we arranged a special 96th birthday shopping trip before the store opened to the public yesterday.”

It concluded: “We’ve missed you Doris and Lil!”

Posing outside the store after their shop, the ladies took off their face masks and flashed a smile for the camera.

Their trollies were bursting with groceries, all packed into handy bags for life.

“It’s absolutely lovely to go back – they treated us like royalty,”Lil said.

Doris agreed: “It was absolutely marvellous. The Queen couldn’t have had it any better than us. It’s better than a trip to Blackpool.”

“Oh I love this!” cooed one follower.

Another said: “Ah that’s lovely! I enjoy following their account on Facebook.”

A third replied: “Awww this is so lovely.”

Early on in lockdown, the ladies posted a throwback picture of themselves shopping in Asda.

In the caption they revealed just how much they missed doing their weekly shop.

They’ve missed their weekly shopping trips

“We are looking forward to be able to go shopping again @asda. We are really missing our weekly shopping trips and seeing all the nice staff at our local store!” they posted.

“Missing your smiling faces every week. Stay safe both and see you soon!” came one of the replies, presumably from a member of staff.

The twins have become quite the celebrities during the pandemic.

They have been interviewed on Heart FM and appeared via video link on BBC Breakfast.
