I’m A Celebrity…

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! is an ITV reality show where celebrities camp together in an Australian rainforest and take on a number of ridiculous challenges as they compete to be crowned King or Queen of the jungle.

It was first broadcast in August 2002 and has been hosted by Ant and Dec for all of the eighteen series it has aired on TV.

Viewers vote on who should leave the camp – but also on which celeb should undertake a bushtucker trial, a challenge that often involves snakes, spiders or other jungle creatures.

The success of a bushtucker trial determines how much food the group receives.

Eating trials can see celebs dared to scoff unusual animal parts, including kangaroo testicle and camel penis.

As long as a contestant is successful – and does not submit by declaring “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!” – stars equal to one meal for the camp will be awarded for each disgusting dish eaten.

These trials have proved controversial, however. Ofcom is believed to have received 694 complaints after Ferne McCann ate a live water spider during a bushtucker trial in the 15th series.

And RSPCA Australia sought to prosecute Gino D’Acampo and Stuart Manning after a rat was killed, cooked and consumed. Despite being charged police, both men escaped prosecution. ITV was fined £1600 over the incident.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! winners have included Tony Blackburn, Kerry Katona, Christopher Biggins, Joe Swash, Stacey Solomon, Charlie Brooks, Vicky Pattison, Scarlett Moffat and Georgia Toffolo.

International versions of the show have aired in Australia (with the camp relocating to South Africa), Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, India, the Netherlands, Romania, Sweden and the US.

Only the UK, German, Hungarian and Australian series are still in production.
