Strictly Come Dancing may have only come to an end last month, but producers are already lining up celebrities for the new series, with BBC newsreader Huw Edwards revealing that he’s been asked to put on his dancing shoes and shake his stuff on the Strictly dance floor.

The 57-year-old News at Ten anchor, who appeared on Strictly as a guest star last year, admitted he was still considering whether he had what it takes to shimmy his way on to the show.

Talking to Radio 2’s Steve Wright, he said: “Following my stellar appearance reading out the terms and conditions in early December, where I basically set the British television world alight, I was asked if I’d consider Strictly.

“And I think the answer is, Steve, I’ve come here today for some advice. Despite all appearances I am quite shy.”

Huw joins celebrities Chris Evans and Alan Carr who are also rumoured to have been approached to join the show’s cast next year. However, he admitted the sequins and fake tan involved was making him think twice.

Musing on the costumes, he said: “That’s what scares me. I think I’ve just got to ponder it… just gauge public opinion.”

Huw’s fans on Twitter were keen for him to take part including It Take Two spin-off show host Zoe Ball who retweeted a fan asking if he was taking part, complete with the hashtag #huwforstrictly.

The father-of-five impressed fans last year when he showed off his three stone weight loss last spring while presenting the coverage of the royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. He revealed he got in shape by taking up boxing.

Speaking to The Sun he said: “I’ve always battled with my weight, until I found boxing. Now I do three session a week and feel great.

“I feel better than I have for years and it’s great getting so many compliments.”

Another famous name in the frame is Cheryl Cole after her fellow The Greatest Dancer judge and Strictly Professional Oti Mabuse said she thought she showed potential for ballroom.

Oti told The Sun: “I would love to see her try. I think if she did Strictly people would love her and see another side that they haven’t seen yet. She would be brilliant.”
