During an interview on Capital Breakfast, Martin told James: “There was one moment that I really have to thank you for as a father – when I saw Roman curled up on your lap and you gave him a hug and my heart just went out and I just thought ‘James thank you so much for doing that.’ ”

He admitted he wished he could have been in the camp himself to be there for his boy, and he was glad Roman had someone to support him.

He added: “It was something that I wanted to do, because you see them and, you know, he’s my kid and I thought someone’s got to give him some love. When James did it I thought ‘thank you so much for that.’ ”

Martin, 58, also took the opportunity to ask the retired sportsman about his son’s well-being while he’s still out in the jungle.

James answered: “Look, he is holding up. I think, you know, he obviously talks so highly about how amazing you are as a dad and your lovely wife and lovely family.

“I think, you know, he has these brilliant days where he sits down in the camp and he goes ‘right, I’ve got a question for you, if you won the lottery what would happen?'”

Roman was emotional after his friend was evicted from the show this week, and James admitted that he was in “awe” of the 26-year-old presenter.

He said: “Roman for me, you know, what a talented kid. I think, at 26 years old, to be the youngest presenter on Capital ever to have a number one show, to be able to be emotional like he is, to be as intelligent, to be as interesting, to be as articulate – I was in awe of lots of people in the camp but especially him.”
