Call The Midwife fans ‘heartbroken’ over adoption storyline twist for the Turners

But could Mae stay with the Turners after all?

Viewers were left emotionally overwhelmed by last night’s episode of Call The Midwife, with one saying on social media that the BBC show “certainly knows how to put you through the mangle with the emotion.”

Fans were left sobbing after a plot swerve in the Turners’ mission to adopt young Mae seemingly guaranteed their foster daughter would be raised elsewhere.

Much-loved characters Shelagh (played by Laura Main) and Doctor Patrick (Stephen McGann) were shown proudly taking commemorative photographs of all three of their children ahead of Mae’s first day at school.

But that moment threatened to become one of their last memories of the child as it was revealed in later scenes a permanent home had been found for Mae.

Furthermore, it seemed the Turners had no say in the matter – and that Mae would be taken away, no matter their wishes.

Distraught viewers begged for the four-year-old to remain with Shelagh and Patrick, with many admitting to crying over the heart-rending storyline.

“They just can’t lose May 😥 #callthemidwife,” insisted one fan on Twitter.

“Please let May stay with the Turners 😭 #callthemidwife,” another agreed.

A third tweeted: “If May does end up leaving the Turners I’m going to absolutely bawl my eyes out.”

However, with two episodes in the current series still to air on telly, many fans are taking hope from the idea there is still enough time for the Turners to win Mae back.

“Rooting for the Turners to adopt Mae. ,” tweeted one.

“Hope Patrick and Shelagh get to keep little Mae ❤️,” said another.

“I feel bad for the Turners. I hope that somehow the original adoption will fall through and that they’re then able to adopt May. ,” suggested a third fan.

There were also several viewers who disagreed with one character’s assertion children do not form their own memories of their early childhood – and would remember the Turners if placed with another family.

Do you think Mae will be allowed to become a permanent member of the Turner family?

– Call the Midwife airs on Sundays on BBC One at 9pm
