Howard Donald leaves Lorraine red-faced over blunder

Fruity Take That singer brands breakfast TV show fake

TV presenter Lorraine Kelly was left red-faced today after singer Howard Donald called her out on air.

The Take That star was on the show to promote his new Channel 4 show, Mission Ignition, and talk about the band’s upcoming 30th anniversary tour.

Sitting down to chat to Lorraine at the top of the show, Howard reached for one of the appetising-looking oranges sitting in a bowl in front of him.

Looking amused, the Never Forget singer turned to Lorraine and said: “I was going to eat an orange but it’s a false one.”

“They’re pretend,” the embarrassed host said. “Not good enough,” Howard joked.

“I’m really sorry about that, we’ll get you a real one,” Lorraine promised.

Rejoining Lorraine later in the show, Howard revealed he was nervous about his new TV show and said: “It’s very strange going on TV on your own for the first time ever, I’m wondering where Mark and Gary are now!”

Chatting about his 30 years in the spotlight alongside bandmates Mark Owen and Gary Barlow, Howard said: “I don’t know where the time went.”

He added: “Coming back in 2007 and doing a concert for the first time and seeing all those people there, knowing that they were still there for us, is incredible you know. Not many people can really do it and we’ve done it.”

Asked if he’s enjoying stardom more the second time around, Howard revealed: “Oh 100 per cent. A couple of us had kids and it makes you appreciate life more.”

He added: “It’s appreciating life, appreciating what we’ve got and knowing how lucky we were in the beginning when we got put in those positions.”

The singer, who is dad to four kids, who range in age from two to 19, said being a father is “tiring”. He added: “Sleep deprivation is the worst.”

Howard said while his eldest “love getting involved” in his career, his youngest are just starting to understand what Daddy does for a living.

“The three year old and two year old are just about getting it and the three year old is interested in coming to see a show, but he’ll probably be asleep by the time the support act’s on,” Howard said.

Howard, Mark and Gary kick off Take That’s 30th anniversary tour next month and, for anyone who hasn’t managed to get tickets, one of the shows is being aired in cinemas across the country.

Howard revealed: “The final night in Cardiff [on June 8], they’re putting it into 800 cinemas in the UK, so it’s going to be amazing.”

Looking forward to their 40th anniversary, a cheeky Lorraine brought the subject back to oranges, asking if Howard’s one-time bandmate Jason Orange would ever rejoin the group.

“I don’t think so,” Howard said. “He’s doing his own thing, he’s happy where he is and he’s the sort of person that at the moment he wants to keep his distance from it and we don’t want to bother him.”

However, Howard, who performed with Gary and Mark last night as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust series of concerts, said: “The door is open for him whenever.”

Mission Ignition is on Channel 4, Saturday at 8pm.
