Davina McCall hits back at “ridiculous” bodyshamers

Fitness fan says "life's too short" to be "judgemental"

TV presenter Davina McCall appeared on Good Morning Britain today and told hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway that it’s “ridiculous” to “demonise” people who enjoy keeping fit.

Appearing on the breakfast TV show to discuss the dangers of sun exposure in childhood, Kate asked Davina how she feels about the “stick” she receives on social media when she posts a picture of herself working out.

Davina, 51, said: “This idea of talking about people being too thin, too fat, oh look at you, all this judgement, forget it, let’s not pass judgement on each other – life’s too short.”

She added: “I know everybody does it a little bit but I usually think if I’m being very judgey about somebody it usually says something about where I’m at rather than them.”

The 100k Drop host told the show that it’s “funny” that she’s better known now for her love of health and fitness rather than her presenting, and revealed: “I got into a car the other day and the woman was like: ‘Oh you’re that fitness lady!'”

She added: “Fitness is really important. I just want to get everybody moving and everybody feeling better.”

Kate said that her daughter Darcey is a Davina fan and has even tried to get her mum to the gym as “Davina is your age”, she revealed.

Answering comments that she exercises too much, Davina told GMB: “I honestly can’t work out too much. I’ve got three kids, I’ve got a day job and I really enjoy going to the gym.”

She added: “I like the community thing of doing a class, I try and go three or four times a week and, if I’m lucky in the holidays, I will try and go five days a week. It makes me feel good and I just think it’s ridiculous saying: ‘Oh you can get addicted to fitness,’ because that’s just going to put people off.”

Hammering her point home, Davina concluded: “We want to try and get people moving and motivated . Trying to demonise people who are working out or doing good things for fitness is ridiculous.”

Davina is mum to kids Holly, 17, Tilly 15, and Chester, 12, with her ex-husband Matthew Robertson. The pair announced their split at the end of 2017.

Posting a “gratuitous” bikini picture to Instagram recently, Davina told her followers: “Don’t care what you think. I feel good in my skin. And leading a healthy life is a huge part of why I feel body positive.”

She added: “I don’t judge anyone for the life they choose or the shape they are. If you hate all of this stuff then seriously unfollow me.”
