X Factor contestant breaks silence over claims he was axed after taking drugs

He wants to clear things up

X Factor hopeful Anthony Russell has spoken out for the first time since leaving the show.

The 27-year-old singer took to Twitter on Monday to address unconfirmed reports he had been booted from the show after taking drugs.

In a statement, he said: “I just want to officially confirm that I had to leave The X Factor after recording the six chair challenge for personal reasons.”

Alluding to the drug allegations, he said: “Some of the stories being spread about my reasons for leaving are totally false but I’m sure you’re all clever enough to not believe everything you read.”

Anthony went on to say: “I want to thank The X Factor for this brilliant opportunity and more importantly to you all for your support.”

He said he’s now “busy writing and recording” new music, adding: “This isn’t the end, just the beginning.”

Fans were quick to wish him well and share their sadness that he is not continuing in the process.

Anthony wowed the judges with his first audition and even moved Sharon Osbourne to tears, with her saying: “You’re as awkward as hell, you really are, but I really felt what you were singing.”

Louis Walsh said: “You’ve got soul and you sang from here. I loved all your little oddities, I love the way you perform. You come alive when you perform.”

Anthony had previously tried out for X Factor a decade ago with no success.

Louis told RadioTimes the panel were sad to say goodbye to Anthony but did not comment on the star’s personal reasons for leaving.

“Anthony has been fantastic across the series, a great singer and performer who we are really sad to see go,” said Louis.

Anthony has been replaced by Sam Black, who initially left the competition at the boot camp stage.

He famously proposed to his girlfriend on stage.

Sam said: “Obviously, I feel terrible for Anthony because he is not only an amazing singer but also a lovely guy. He has even messaged me good luck.

“I really appreciate the second chance I’ve been given and I feel so lucky to get this opportunity. My family and I are over the moon.”

Good luck to both Anthony and Sam.
