TV presenter slams Corrie episode for being “too grim”

Pre-watershed violence doesn't go down well

| Updated:

Well, it seems like we weren’t the only ones to be shocked by last night’s gruesome episode of Coronation Street.

In horrific scenes, we saw deranged Pat Phelan’s evil revenge plan for Vinnie Ashford come to fruition, with not one but TWO killings shown before the watershed.

And shortly after the credits rolled, one well-known Corrie fan took to Twitter to slate the show for being unnecessarily violent.

Former This Morning presenter Fern Britton, 60, wrote: “Oh #Corrie, this is too grim and just not right.”

She then followed up with another tweet saying: “Oh #Corrie, yes performances, script and storyline good, but IT’S NOT CORRIE!”

We’re not quite sure what the mother-of-four, who’s married to celebrity chef Phil Vickery, meant by that – the ITV soap has hardly been light family entertainment in recent months.

For a start, we had the grooming storyline, with Bethany Platt victimised by a sex ring.

But to be fair, the TV presenter wasn’t alone in giving the programme stick for its bloody scenes last night.

One viewer tweeted: “OMG that was shocking – fancy putting a shooting on this early.”

Another said: “Just turned over to @ITV and I think #CoronationStreet is a bit gruesome for pre-watershed. Don’t think having a shooting is good at this hour.”

And a third scathed: “Way too much before watershed. Gone too far.”

In scenes more reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino movie, we saw Phelan persuade desperate Andy to kill Vinny for him – which he did.

And then, after Andy attempted to shoot Phelan, the waiter found himself on the wrong end of a bullet.

Phelan then dumped both bodies in a river, before heading off for a beer.

Actually, come to think of it, maybe Fern had a point…
