This Morning viewers outraged over obese nurses debate

No one was impressed with the topic

This Morning hosted a debate on obese nurses on Wednesday and fans of the show were not happy.

A recent study has shown that one in four nurses is overweight and that some people are unhappy being given diet and nutrition advice from someone who is obese themselves.

Two nurses appeared on the show with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby to give their stories.

One was considered to be obese and had an unhealthy BMI, while the other lost a substantial amount of weight – five stone – in order to set a better example to patients.

Lisa told the hosts how the nature of the job was making her lifestyle unhealthy as the breaks they got were so unpredictable.

“If the emergency alarm goes off, you have to go and reheat your dinner later. I’ve reheated it three times before. So you just grab something quick and easy because you can’t guarantee you’re going to get your break.

“You’re working 12 hours a day, you get up, go to work, come home and it’s eat or sleep.”

Phil pointed out that the other thing that can be a hindrance is the fact some fast food chains offer nurses a 50 percent discount.

“It’s lovely for us that any company offers us a discount with the wages we do get, but yeah, it would be nice to have the healthier stuff discounted too,” Lisa said.

Megan, who had lost a lot of weight herself, then added: “I don’t think [obese nurses] are setting a bad example, you have to have a bit of grace for everybody.

“Everybody is doing their best and nurses are humans too. Obesity is a national issue, not just an NHS issue.”

She also told how she’s lost five stone through Slimming World and it taught her to manage her mealtimes better by cooking in bulk and freezing food to take to work with her.

“Weight loss is planning, that’s the key,” she said.

Viewers of the show definitely had an opinion on the debate – and it was that the whole thing was stupid.

Everyone felt it was completely irrelevant whether a nurse was overweight or not as long as they did the job correctly.

Nurses are definitely heroes, so we should really cut them some slack.

This Morning is on weekdays at 10.30am.
