This Morning highlights plight of lonely older dogs seeking homes

But remember, a dog is for life, not just for Christmas

This Morning viewers were left both enthralled and heartbroken today after a segment about lonely older dogs that need new homes.

Five dogs were brought into the studio to help show why older dogs shouldn’t be overlooked at shelters, when people are searching for a new furry friend.

Vet Scott Miller was on hand to introduce the gorgeous animals, telling viewers he understood many people wanted puppies when it came to welcoming a new dog.

He said: “A lot of people think older dogs can be more difficult, can have medical issues, but not always. And they can learn new tricks.

“I find older dogs are incredibly grateful when they get a new home.”

Viewers were left melting as each of the beautiful, impeccably behaved pooches was introduced, along with the handlers and foster carers who have been looking after them.

Bella, 7

She has a painful spine condition which means she’s in pain when she turns her head around. She would suit a slightly older family, not necessarily with young kids. She likes walks but is also “quite lazy” and likes snoozing on the sofa.

Daisy, 10

Her previous owner is very ill and was heartbroken to place her up for adoption. She’s looking for a more active household as she loves walks.

Bear, 11

Bear, a female, doesn’t need a huge amount of exercise and just wants a lovely new home where she can snooze and relax.

Ty, 8

He’s a “soft, sweet dog” who is very friendly and just needs a new start in life. He would suit an energetic family, probably not with other dogs, but cats and kids are fine.

Biscuit, 13

She was found wandering on the street so her previous owner is unknown. She’s an “absolute darling” who loves walks, food and still has her own teeth!

All the details are available on the This Morning website but, as Scott Miller warned: “Dogs aren’t just for Christmas, they are for life.”

Needless to say, many viewers said they just wanted to take them all home!

This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV.
