This Morning criticised for Stephen Hawking tribute blunder

Fans were appalled by the technical blip during tribute

| Updated:

This Morning viewers weren’t impressed with the show’s tribute to the late Stephen Hawking today.

A segment dedicated to the eminent physicist, who has passed away at the age of 76, was made at the very end of the show.

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield introduced a short clip paying tribute to the mathematician but it seems a technical blunder meant it hit the completely wrong note.

Holly said: “Just before we leave you today, we want to pay tribute to the world renowned physicist and genuine genius Stephen Hawking who has sadly died.”

They then showed a montage of images of the professor but instead of a moving voiceover, the Meghan Trainor song ‘All About That Bass’ was played.

The show quickly realised the error and cut the upbeat track off to replace it with the intended inspirational words once spoken by Stephen.

But the error didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, who took to Twitter in their droves to slam the show for the mix-up.

One wrote: “All about the bass over Steven Hawking tribute, shambles stuff #ThisMorning.”

Another said: “What the hell was #ThisMorning thinking playing all about that bass as a tribute to Stephen Hawking technical fault or not!! It’s totally inappropriate Shocking tbh.”

A third declared it was the “worst tribute to Stephen Hawking ever #ThisMorning.”

Others were aggrieved at how the brief tribute appeared to be a very rushed addition to the end of the show, shoehorned in as the final music started to play.

One viewer complained: “When did #thismorning become so bad that they ignore the death of Stephen Hawking during the whole show then finally throw together a poor tribute only a GCSE media student would be proud or worthy of?!  Very poor indeed! RIP Mr Hawking.”

Another said: “A ‘tribute’ to Stephen Hawking that was seconds long and played with the theme tune over it. You shouldn’t have bothered #ThisMorning.”

A third said: “Shame on #ThisMorning for that rushed together so called tribute to Stephen Hawking. Should have been the first thing mentioned on the show.”

A spokesman for This Morning told ED! there had been “a technical blip that was corrected as quickly as humanly possible.”

They added that sadly mistakes can happen on live TV.

Professor Hawking’s family revealed this morning that he passed away peacefully at his home in Cambridge.

The Brief History Of Time author had lived with motor neurone disease for decades, after being told he could only have two years to live when he was first diagnosed in the Sixties.

In a statement his children Lucy, Robert and Tim said: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years.
