Strictly star ‘struggling’ with injury ahead of Blackpool

This is worrying with just days until Blackpool

Strictly Come Dancing finally heads to Blackpool this weekend, which means the pressure is well and truly on for the remaining contestants.

But unfortunately for one celebrity dancer, they’ve found themselves struggling to recover from a nasty injury which has left them in agony.

Debbie McGee’s sister Donna told The Mirror that her 59-year-old sibling’s been battling painful twisted muscles in her back for the last couple of weeks, but the injury is particularly “playing up” right now.

Ouch.

“She’s twisted a muscle so she’s struggling,” said Donna.

“It’s a real shame. She has been suffering – she had a hot water bottle on her back all week.

“It’s really been playing up.”

Debbie first alluded to her injury in a column for The Telegraph last week, admitting she’d been struggling with ongoing back issues that had impacted her rehearsals for Saturday night’s salsa.

She wrote: “I’ve had to work much harder with this dance. The hip wiggle is a figure of eight and you’ve got to make sure that the fringing on your dress moves about!

“We’ve got three lifts, but I’ve injured my back again so we haven’t been able to practice them much. I couldn’t even get up out of a chair earlier in the week.

“But that’s the Strictly journey I suppose.”

Debbie and pro partner Giovanni Pernice ended up with 35 out of 40 points for the performance.

Debbie, meanwhile, is staying positive and has been telling fans how much fun she’s having learning the samba with Giovanni.

And we can expect a Girl Power-centric routine!

She tweeted: “Having SO much fun learning the samba to Spice Girls medley @pernicegiovann1 is certainly pushing me out of my comfort zone with this dance.”

No doubt Debbie and Giovanni are hoping to achieve their second perfect score.

They scored the first 40 of the series two weeks ago for their tango, which they performed to Black Eyed Peas song I Gotta Feeling.

They wowed the judges and audience with a flawless tango that had judge Craig Revel Horwood leave his seat, approach them and bow down in amazement.

“That’s a first!” joked Tess Daly.

Strictly said goodbye to Ruth Langsford and Anton Du Beke last weekend, after they were sent home following a dance-off with Jonnie Peacock and Oti Mabuse.

Just eight couples remain in the competition.
