Kent Riley from Hollyoaks to DC Yates: Actor’s journey across popular UK soaps

Think cute Scouse accent...

How annoying is it when you think you recognise someone from somewhere and you can’t quite remember where from?

If you’re anything like us, the arrival of DC Yates in has had you tearing your hair out in frustration wondering where you’d seen him before.

Well, worry no more. We can reveal that DC Yates is played by Kent Riley – who starred as Zak Ramsey in Hollyoaks.

Kent starred in Oaks from 2006 until 2010, playing footie-mad scouser Zak. He was one of a group of a students and narrowly avoided being blown up in the famous explosion at the Dog In the Pond.

He left Hollyoaks after being brainwashed by racist Des Townsend, but seeing the error of his ways just in time.

Zak’s girlfriend was Michaela McQueen, who followed him to London just a few weeks after he’d left the village.

But when Michaela returned to the show in 2011, she revealed she and Zak were no longer together.

Since his time on Hollyoaks, Kent’s been pretty busy. He’s played another police officer – PC Donovan – in Doctors.

He appeared in Happy Valley, and Cilla, as well as playing Barry in the hilarious Brief Encounters about a group of women who started Ann Summers parties in the 1980s.

Kent also had a role in the heartbreaking mini-series Little Boy Blue, about the tragic murder of schoolboy Rhys Jones.

Some fans were frustrated that they recognised the actor but couldn’t recall where they’d seen him before, wondering where they knew him from.

But others clocked Kent straight away. One fan wrote: “Is that policeman Zak from #Hollyoaks?”

And another said they hoped he’d stay in Corrie a long while.

We’re just hoping he sticks around on the cobbles long enough to see evil Pat Phelan behind bars!
