Gemma’s Skegness put-down on Coronation Street has caused upset in the seaside town

Even the Mayor has got involved!

| Updated:

Coronation Street writers have managed to cause offence with the good people of Skegness, after one of the characters made a cutting remark about the seaside town.

Gemma Winter (played by Dolly-Rose Campbell) was seen on screen being miserable after learning that the only reason Henry asked her on a date was to complete a bet.

She announced to Toyah Battersby and Peter Barlow, that ‘blokes are a total waste of space’ going on to say they should be banned from the country.

Peter chipped in: “Somewhere hot like California would be nice.”

Looking horrified, Gemma said: “No, send them somewhere cold and miserable like Skegness.”

Now, we’re sure she was only joking, but it appears it upset many Corrie viewers, including The Mayor of Skegness!

But some of them actually agreed with the soap’s description…

We don’t think it can be that bad seeing as the holiday destination attracts 4.5million people a year, according to it’s local news website. Lincolnshire Live.

The Mayor of Skegness, Councillor Danny Brookes, told the website it wasn’t as bad as they made out.

He said: “Everybody knows it is isn’t cold and miserable.”

Fans of Skeggy, as it’s affectionately known, took to the Skegness Skegness Skegness Facebook group to defend the town.

The post said: “Just watching Coronation Street and they have said that should send men to miserable cold Skegness the cheek of it.”

Megan Nicola Wilkinson added: “It’s cold everywhere at the moment, not just Skegness. So fed up of people badmouthing Skegness.”

Linda Frankis added: “Moved here 11 years ago, don’t regret it one little bit.”

Have you ever been to Skegness? Do you agree with the soap’s description?
