Former Emmerdale star collapses on stage during performance

The actor is recuperating at home

Emmerdale’s John McArdle was taken ill on stage during a performance at York Theatre Royal on Wednesday night.

The actor, who played Lawrence White’s lover, Ronnie Hale, until recently and also Billy Corkhill in Brookside in the 1980s, has been staring in Things I Know To Be True.

He collapsed on stage on Wednesday evening and the performance had to be cancelled while he was seen by doctors.

Thursday’s matinee was cancelled as well, but the nighttime show will go ahead with someone else reading in John’s lines.

A representative of the theatre confirmed to Metro.co.uk that the fall was caused by “exhaustion” and that he’s taking a few days at home to recover.

They posted a message to their Twitter page about the incident revealing John had been given the all clear.

John’s Emmerdale character left the Dales earlier this year after discovering his partner Lawrence had driven Chrissie’s biological father to take his own life.

Ronnie and Lawrence were all set for their happy ever after in St Ives before Ronnie made the decision he couldn’t be part of Lawrence’s life any more.

Fans were distraught at his sudden exit, but John has teased that he could be back.

Speaking about his exit to Inside Soap, the actor admitted there are other reasons his character might show his face again in the Dales.

“Ronnie has a lot of friends in the village now. He’s good mates with Lisa and some others.

“He’s always ready to do building work, so he could come back at any time.”

He added, perhaps hopefully: “Emmerdale is such a wonderful place to work. The crew are fantastic and the cast are great.

“I’ve worked in lots of places, but this show is one of the best and I’ll miss it.”

Get better soon, John.
