Former Coronation Street star Adam Rickitt opens up about on-screen kiss with Bruno Langley

He didn't understand all the fuss

| Updated:

Hollyoaks star Adam Rickitt has said he was “disappointed” by the reaction to the famous first gay kiss on Coronation Street.

Adam, who now plays Kyle Kelly on Hollyoaks, talked about the kiss on GMB this morning and said he wasn’t impressed that it created such a fuss.

Adam played Nick Tilsley on Corrie back in the early noughties. And in 2003, Todd Grimshaw – who was just beginning to question his sexuality – kissed Nick after a night out.

On GMB this morning, Adam reminisced that news of the kiss made the front page of The Sun.

“It was a big moment for Corrie and a big moment for the country,” presenter Piers Morgan said.

“Yes, and I found it a bit disappointing that it was,” Adam replied.

Presenter Susanna Reid asked if the Corrie kiss had come before the famous Brookside lesbian snog between Beth Jordache and Margaret Clemence.

“Brookside was many, many years before that,” Adam said, adding to his argument that a gay kiss on Corrie shouldn’t have been such big news.

But Piers pointed out that when something is on Corrie it “makes it normal”.

“When Corrie does these things it removes the final taboo,” he said.

“It’s great that soaps can do that,” Adam agreed. “And other soaps – like Hollyoaks which I’m in at the moment – push the boundaries even further.”

Kyle Kelly, Adam’s alter-ego in Hollyoaks, returns to the village after a spell in jail next week.

He spends a steamy night with James Nightingale – but is this the beginning of a beautiful relationship or will Kyle regret getting involved?
