Fans moved as Shirley Ballas shares heartbreaking story on Loose Women

But she'll be celebrating Christmas at last

Aston Merrygold’s exit from Strictly last Sunday has caused a huge amount of fuss, with many fans shouting “fix!” and/or blaming Craig Revel Horwood for giving the JLS man such a low score.

But sometimes, you have to put these things into perspective and realise that there are more important things in life.

That’s something Strictly judge Shirley Ballas has learnt after her older brother David took his own life in 2003.

And following her emotional appearance on Loose Women on Thursday, when she opened her heart about the tragedy, fans flocked to social media to say how moved they were by the interview.

Shirley, 57, told panellists Andrea McLean, Nadia Sawalha, Katie Price and Jane Moore that this coming weekend will be a special one for her family.

She revealed: “I’m going home on Saturday evening. My mum’s put a [Christmas] tree up for the first time.

“In 2003, my brother took his own life. He died on the 5th of December, so we haven’t celebrated Christmas at all.”

Fighting back tears, she then filled in the details of her sibling’s torment and how his death had affected her.

“He had this six weeks of feeling down… not really feeling up to himself,” she said sadly. “And my mother was with him.

“He was my biggest fan, you know? He was not just my brother, he was like a father figure… we would talk every day.

“It was difficult. I lost a big part [of my life]. I always felt very safe with him.”

The rest of the panel clearly felt for the Liverpudlian star, and they weren’t the only ones. Twitter was soon full of messages admiring Shirley’s bravery.

One fan tweeted: “Getting goosebumps watching #shirleyballas’s interview.”

Another said: “@ShirleyBallas Just want to say u were brilliant on #LooseWomen. So honest.”

And a third fan gushed: “What a lovely person @ShirleyBallas clearly is. Her appearance on #LooseWomen is a fascinating, emotional and heart-rending watch.”

Even Shirley’s chums on Strictly were impressed by her appearance, and the programme’s official Twitter feed posted a heartfelt tribute.

It said: “What an extraordinary interview from our head judge @ShirleyBallas, speaking on #loosewomen about her brother taking his own life and this weekend after #Strictly.

“She will be going home, as her mother has put a Christmas tree up for the first since 2003. Love you, Shirley.”

Our sentiments exactly.
