Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins makes surprising confession about flashback episode

The special one-off will air next week

Emmerdale fans will soon discover more about Charity Dingle’s tragic past when ITV air a special flashback episode dedicated to the popular character.

The much-anticipated standalone show hits our screens next week, and delves into Charity’s teenage years when she was groomed and raped by corrupt copper DI Bails.

Showing on Tuesday (29 May), viewers will see Charity wracked with emotion as she discusses the baby boy she had and lost when she was just 14.

After playing the character for 18 years, the flashback episode is “the hardest thing” she’s done on the show.

Speaking to the Radio Times, she says: “This episode was incredibly challenging and the hardest thing I’ve done on the show. But I’ve loved second of it, which I know sounds weird.

“It’s always great to be given something where there’s a whole host of things going on. You have to go to difficult places with such dramatic scenes, but it was great teamwork and stunning writing.”

While much of the episode has been kept under wraps, Emma reveals she was told about the storyline some time ago, saying: “I was told it was all very dark and given little nuggets of information along the way, but when DI Bails came in a few years ago we knew there was history they’d be revisiting at some point.

“But then I left to have a baby and it was shelved for a bit. Now we’re finally revisiting it which is brilliant.”

Emma also describes the young actress Mica as “insanely brilliant and clever”.

Tune in at 7pm on Tuesday 29 May on ITV.
