EastEnders’ saddest ever deaths

Grab yourself some tissues, there are some weepies here

| Updated:

We pretty much can’t cope with Carmel Kazemi’s heart-breaking reaction to being told that son Shakil’s injuries were too severe to save his life after his shock stabbing this week.

And if you thought that was devastating, there’s more to come next week as the tragic news rocks all of Walford.

EastEnders’ heart-breaking death ‘game’ has been consistently strong over the years. Take a look at these absolute weepies for an emotional trip down memory lane.

Jamie Mitchell

Probably the death we remember crying the most tears over in EE history was Jamie Mitchell. In case you can’t remember, he was run over by Martin Fowler just before Christmas.

He’d just got engaged to Sonia and life was looking pretty rosy for the teen heart-throb, until Martin and Spencer Moon mowed him down on the Square.

Jamie died of his injuries on Christmas Day while Sonia cuddled him and told him what an amazing future they were going to have. SOB!

Oh GOD! Poor Ronnie Mitchell had literally just found out that Stacey Slater’s mate Danielle was actually ‘Amy’ the baby evil Archie had made her give up when she was a teenager.

But their mother/daughter reunion didn’t go exactly to plan – that’s what happens when you do these things in the middle of a non-pedestrianised area folk – when Janine Butcher accidentally ran Danielle over.

Danielle died at the scene while Ronnie gave her a heart-wrenching speech about how she’s dreamed of her every day since she gave her away.

Lucy Beale

Ok, we weren’t particularly sad about Lucy getting bumped off tbh – she wasn’t a particularly likeable character, unless blackmail, drugs and manipulation are your thing – but the reaction of her family had us in pieces.

From Ian’s initial denial that his only daughter’s body had been found in the woods, to Peter’s absolutely breathtaking meltdown when he heard his twin was dead, we’re not ashamed to admit we sobbed. And then sobbed some more.

Joyce Murray

Ted’s reaction hit us in the feels (Credit: BBC)

Like with Lucy it wasn’t so much the loss of Joyce that made us go all emosh, but the reaction to her death. Husband Ted went into total denial mode when he discovered her lifeless body one morning earlier this year.

He’d convinced himself she was just sleeping and even went about doing her chores for her, while she rested.

But the devastating truth was revealed when Bernadette Taylor and Tiffany Butcher headed into the flat and saw Joyce for themselves.

The storyline was even sadder as Ted couldn’t afford to bury his late wife.

Poor Tiff had just planned her life without abusive husband Grant when disaster struck and Frank Butcher hit her with his car as she chased Grant, trying to get baby Courtney back.

Seriously Walford Town Planners, let’s have a serious conversation about getting the Square pedestrianised.

Tiff died at the scene, while a devastated crowd looked on. The saddest thing had to be Grant turning little Courtney’s face away so she didn’t see her mum die.

James Branning

A second loss for Ronnie and arguably even sadder because she’d already lost Danielle and had a miscarriage triggered by her evil dad shoving her into the bar at The Vic.

Ronnie looked like she’d finally got the happy ever after she’d dreamt of when she gave birth to her and Jack Branning’s son, James.

But tragedy struck when James was only a few days old and Ronnie found him dead in his cot. Ronnie’s heartbreaking cries of ‘we’ll get you nice and warm’ will stay with us forever.

Stan Carter

Stan Carter might have been a cantankerous old sod but we grew to love him during his time on the Square. When he passed away from cancer, with daughter Shirley at his side, we were in bits.

She wouldn’t let Tina or Mick be at the hospice when he passed away to protect them and Stan’s final words ‘be together’ were the saddest ever.
