EastEnders fans divided by decision to bring back e20 nightclub

Some fans loved the comeback, others hated it...

Mel Owen and her son Hunter have resurrected old Walford nightspot e20 – and some fans aren’t happy about it.

Veteran viewers will remember that e20 was the name of Steve Owen’s club before his untimely death in 2002.

While Mel had settled on the name The Phoenix, headstrong Hunter had other ideas.

Keen to pay tribute to his late dad on the anniversary of his death – and annoying Mel’s love interest Jack Branning in the process – Hunter changed the name of the nightclub on Turpin Road as a surprise.

While Mel seemed happy with the change, BBC viewers were divided.

One fan called it a “downgrade”, while another blasted: “Not liking the decision to name the nightclub E20 in #EastEnders. The original club is an iconic soap business and having it associated with the current mediocrity cheapens it a bit imo.”

Another remembered: “Wasn’t e20 the name of a failed spin off too? #EastEnders.”

However, other fans were in total approval.

One excited fan tweeted: “Yessss! So glad its called E20 again!! Its always been e20 to me!! @bbceastenders #EastEnders #RemindsmeofPurpleE3.”

“Love how it’s called E20,” said another.

In an online poll, 47 per cent said they liked the name, while the majority said they’d have preferred another.

Only time will tell if the venture will be a success for businesswoman Mel… Let’s hope the ghosts of the past don’t come back to haunt her. After all, Saskia Duncan was killed on the premises.

The local nightspot was also the scene of a blaze in 2001 after Mel herself set it on fire!
