Debbie McGee hits back at negative comments from fans

Viewers don't believe she deserved perfect scores

Last night Debbie McGee broke Strictly records by becoming the first contestant to ever earn a perfect score of 40 at this stage of the competition.

Judges were so impressed with Debbie’s fierce and fiery tango, that even hard-to-please Craig Revel Horwood came out from behind the judges desk and did a “we are not worthy” bow to the star.

The pair pulled out all the stops as they danced to the Black Eyed Peas dancefloor classic, I Gotta Feeling.

But while Debbie, and her dance partner Giovanni Pernice were obviously thrilled with their score, not everyone thinks it was well-deserved.

Fans took to Twitter to complain that the magician’s assistant, who was married to Paul Daniels, is actually a trained dancer and shouldn’t have been allowed to compete in the show.

@Buildygirl said, “Debbie McGee is a professional dancer taking part in an amateur show. She’s good but not really fair on the rest.”

@beautybythebun agreed, Debbie McGee is doing so well but she used to be a dancer… I want to see people who have never had any training.”

And the criticism didn’t stop there, @Yogibear311 thought the judges went a bit overboard… “Am I missing something here?! Thought it was a good tango but think the judges are way over the top in praise for Debbie.”

But Debbie was quick to defend herself on social media… telling someone who had praised her dancing, “Thanks. I’m trying to ignore all the negative ones. You can’t please everyone. I’m just doing my best and enjoying myself.”

While Strictly fans believe that the reason Debbie is such a good dancer is down to her professional past, she has hinted that dancing is actually in her genes.

Speaking to the Sunday People, she explained: “My mum just dances for fun. Her and my dad always used to dance at parties and weddings, they loved jiving.

“Since my dad died she goes out with her brother Toby on a Saturday night to a British Legion club that has a live band.”

Whatever is behind Debbie’s fancy footwork it’s clear she’s in the running for that glitter ball come the end of the series.
