David Platt’s rapist arrives in Coronation Street tonight

The beginning of his dark storyline

| Updated:

Corrie has had a few controversial storylines lately, like Phelan framing and murdering all over the shop and Bethany Platt turning from rape victim into lap dancer.

But one storyline seems to have divided fan opinion more than any other in recent times – David Platt becoming the victim of male rape.

The storyline will see the young dad drugged and sexually assaulted by a newcomer called Josh who starts working at the garage.

They form a friendship and the attack happens after a night out.

Corrie has said the story will focus on David’s emotions and feelings in the aftermath of the rape, rather than the physical attack itself.

He’ll battle feelings of guilt and shame as he wonders whether or not to tell the police what happened.

Some fans have threatened to boycott the ITV soap because of the dark and controversial nature of the story, while others have praised Corrie for tackling an issue that’s still pretty taboo.

Whatever your opinion might be of the storyline, it kicks off tonight when Josh arrives in Weatherfield.

He turns up looking for a job and wants Tyrone Dobbs to take him on to replace murdered Luke Britton at the garage.

Josh seems like a normal lad as he clumsily asks what happened to his predecessor, not realising that Luke has been the victim of a brutal murder.

He impresses Tyrone during an informal job interview at the Rovers, where Tyrone jokes the newbie should be auditioning for Take Me Out instead of applying for a job at the garage with him and Kev.

Julia Goulding – who plays David’s girlfriend Shona Ramsey – recently spoke out about the storyline that’s got everyone talking.

She told Digital Spy: “Obviously Coronation Street have done a lot of research with Jack and with people who have been raped. I think he’s going to do it absolute justice and he’s a fantastic actor.”

Coronation is on tonight at 7.30pm and again at 8.30pm tonight
