Coronation Street star Nicola Thorp reveals new storyline will “make soap history”

There's set to be a shocking turn of events

Coronation Street are lining up a dramatic autumn which could see Pat Phelan exposed as the killer that he is at last.

Show newcomer Nicola Thorp, who plays Phelan’s long-lost daughter Nicola Rubenstein, appeared on Tuesday’s Lorraine and teased what’s to come for her character and her dad.

Speaking to stand-in host Christine Lampard, Nicola discussed the fact the Phelan will be confirmed as her real dad after a DNA test.

The show played a clip of Phelan actually sobbing – yes, you read that right, he cries – when he finds out the news. Who is this version of Pat Phelan?!

The scene prompted Christine to ask whether this means we’ll be seeing a softer side to Phelan now.

“Do you think [he’ll] potentially start to own up to things, open up a little bit to you?”

Nicola replied: “It’s got to come out at some point. He’s got two choices; he can either own up to what he’s done and hope she loves him for who he is, or does he do everything he can to hide it?

“All of that will be unfolding over the autumn,” she continued. “It’s a really exciting time.

“If you don’t already watch Corrie then now is the time to start! I can’t reveal too much but what is going to happen over the next few months is going to make soap history!”

Ooh, we like the sound of that!

The list of Phelan’s crimes is long: assault, intimidation, blackmail, scamming the locals, oh and let’s not forget murder. It’s only right that the soap gods will punish him somehow.

But it seems the villain has already realised he needs to atone for his sins and will turn to God in an attempt to cleanse his soul.

Settle down with a cuppa, this is likely to take some time.

Phelan visits a church confessional to own up to his wrong doings and surprises us all when he admits he deserves to be punished for his sins.

Is this confession really enough to atone all the bad stuff he’s done over the years?

We’re guessing not if what’s to come is going to break the soap mould.

And despite this change of personality, we all know a leopard doesn’t change its spots and as the net closes in we’re likely to see Phelan’s dark side emerge again. Will his nearest and dearest come out unscathed?
