Coronation Street star fearing for her future on the soap after Shayne Ward exit

"None of us are safe," she admits

Coronation Street star Faye Brookes has revealed that she’s been worried about holding onto her job ever since it was announced Shayne Ward was departing the show.

The actress, who plays Kate Connor on the ITV soap, told The Sun that she was “devastated” that her on-screen brother would be leaving the soap imminently and hinted that perhaps the decision to leave wasn’t entirely down to Shane…

She told the publication: “I think he’s probably going to be upset about it until he goes. It’s a difficult thing to deal with but I totally understand why they’ve done it.”

“I’m absolutely devastated that he’s going, but I also realise you have to go with the changes.”

Faye, who has been dating Pop Idol star Gareth Gates for the last five years, went on to say that she gets on so well with Shayne, who plays Aidan Connor, that they are like real-life siblings…

“He is like my brother off screen, too, and probably the only person I truly confide in at work. He came in at the same time as me, he has the same background as my boyfriend, and he gets me and he gets Gareth.”

So does this mean Faye is worried about her role on the show?

“Oh yeah. It’s the first question that popped into my head. None of us are safe, because Shayne is really good at his job and he’s loved.

“It really does make you pull your socks up. I don’t want to go anywhere. I’m working my bum off and I hope they’ll keep me there for a very long time.”

Shayne responded to reports that he was due to depart the cobbles back in December last year.

He told his followers on Twitter: “Hey everyone. I just wanted to thank you all so much for your lovely kind messages regarding the news of my departure from Coronation Street next year. I truly love you all.”

While singer-turned-actor’s exit storyline is currently tightly under wraps, Shayne’s character, Aidan, is currently going through donating a kidney for his sister, Carla.

Faye has also had her fair share on hard-hitting storylines over the years – most recently being her affair with married friend Rana Nazir.

The pair finally gave into their passion after weeks of flirting – and ended up getting steamy in the back on a fast food van… scenes which Faye claims are some of the steamiest the show has ever seen!

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
