Pat Phelan’s death gave Coronation Street a bumper night in the ratings on Friday.
The killer builder’s clash with wife Eileen saw her kick him into the sea, apparently putting his murderous reign at an end, and it was watched by millions of viewers.
More than eight million people tuned in to watch Phelan’s comeuppance making it the most watched soap that night by some millions.
The ratings will be seen as a huge success in the current climate of television viewers with a Corrie spokeswoman calling them ‘superb’.
However, they pale into comparison with past telly ratings like the 13 million who tuned in to watch Richard Hillman’s death in 2003.

Even that was nothing compared to when Hilda Ogden left in 1987.
A whopping 26 million people were glued to their sets as she emotionally said goodbye to the cobbles on Christmas Day.
EastEnders still holds the crown however with a huge 30m watching on Christmas Day in 1986 as Den served Angie with their divorce papers.
But the low-key drama was nothing compared to Corrie this week when Eileen murdered Phelan by kicking him off the lighthouse wall and into the sea.
Phelan had gone too far trying to get her to save him when he claimed to have her son Todd locked up.
Screaming ‘liar’ she began stamping on his hands to make sure he would never hurt anyone again.
But fans aren’t convinced he is dead, and suspect he’s going to make a return later to wreak unholy revenge on the cobbles.
And Eileen will soon be arrested for murder in a shock twist, which will probably make her regret killing him off quite so quickly.

There’s also the worry that he wasn’t lying about Todd, and he really was keeping Eileen’s on-the-run son hidden like he did with Andy Carver.
